Rules and guidelines for
The Provident Bank's 170th Anniversary
Essay Contest

About the contest:
The Provident Bank is sponsoring an essay contest for New Jersey students to commemorate its 170th anniversary.  Provident is challenging students to pick their favorite president or invention and write an essay about why.  The president has to have held office or the invention must have been made within the last 170 years.

How to enter:
In addition to submitting an essay, participants complete and submit the entry form, found in the following links:

The entries must be submitted either through email or regular mail. Emailed entries must be sent to ProvidentEssay@providentnj.com with the essay and entry form attached. Entries sent via regular mail must be addressed to The Provident Bank, Attn: Jean Quinn, Vice President, Corporate Communications, 830 Bergen Ave., Jersey City, NJ 07306. Only one entry per person.

All entries must be received by Tuesday, April 28, 2009.

 

Criteria:

  • All essays must be about a President of the United States that held office or an invention that was created in or after 1839.
  • The essay must provide thoughtful reasoning as to why the topic was selected.
  • Entries will be divided into two groups (grades 5-8 and 9-12) for judging:
  • Participants in grades 5, 6, 7 or 8 must submit a 400 word essay with their entry form.
  • Participants in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 must submit a 500 word essay with their entry form.
  • Participants must comply with these rules in order to be eligible to win.

 

Judging:
Essays will be reviewed and judged by employees of The Provident Bank. They will be judged based on the topic and reasons why it was selected.

If the essay topic took place before 1839 or exceeds the word limit, the essay will be withdrawn from consideration.

Entries will be sorted into two judging groups, grades 5-8 and grades 9-12. One winner from each group and topic will be chosen, with a total of four first place winners, four second place winners and eight third place winners.

Winners will be announced by the end of May and notified by the contact information provided in the entry form.

 

Prizes:
The four first place winners will each receive an 8GB iPod Touch and a $500 donation to their school's media center or library. Additionally, their essays will be posted on www.ProvidentNJ.com. The four second place winners will each receive an iPod Shuffle and a $50 savings bond. The eight third place winners will each receive a $50 savings bond. Employees of The Provident Bank and its subsidiaries, members of their immediate family and suppliers of The Provident Bank are not eligible to enter.
